Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the El Hierro Island Open Fotosub is holding another edition this year which once again has received the backing of Promotur Turismo de Canarias as co-sponsor of the important event. The El Hierro Island Open Fotosub is a first-rate resource for promoting the tourism brand of the Canary Islands and publicising the excellent qualities of the archipelago’s marine depths to various European markets.
This sponsorship comes under the category of ‘active tourism’ which includes the communication platform “High-definition Immersion”, and is aimed at developing actions that motivate amateur divers and underwater photographers to journey to the islands.
For the first time ever over the three days of the Fotosub event, participants competed in taking the most pictures of different algae, as well as searching for different specimens of fish to photograph with their underwater cameras. The divers taking part, who had to free dive by holding their breath without a tank, took more than 3,200 photos, resulting in 324 snaps of fish and 708 of algae being entered into the competition.
Seventy-four different species of fish were photographed in total, as well as another 70 of algae from the dive sites of La Caleta, Punta Restinga and El Desierto, the areas marked out for the competition. Two of the six participating free divers were Spanish champions and four were from the Canary Islands. The four-time champion of free diving underwater photography in Spain, Juan Carballo, was the winner of this edition, having presented the greatest number of different species photographed in the waters of El Hierro.
