Since yesterday, 21 June, and until Sunday 25, the Canary Islands tourism brand has been at the BMW International Open 2017 tournament in Munich to shore up its position as a golfing destination in the German market. Representatives from the islands’ golf courses and hotels have joined in this promotional action, organised by Promotur Turismo de Canarias, as well as organisations advertising Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Some 60,000 people are expected to visit the five-day tournament, which is why it is such a great opportunity to show off the Canary Islands’ excellent climate to such a demanding audience, a climate in which golf can be played throughout the year on any of the archipelago’s 22 courses, and where there is an amazing range of hotels, cuisine and huge variety of beaches.

A fifth of tourists who come to play golf on the Canary Islands are from Germany, making it the second market leader for the archipelago, with 23,514 of the 117,735 golfers who visited last year being German. There has also been a steady increase in the number of German golfing tourists visiting the islands, with a 14% increase in 2016 compared to the previous year, or in other words 3,273 more golfers visiting the islands that year from Germany.

It is important to note that 84.7% of golfing tourists are loyal to their destination and become repeat visitors. Of these visitors, 31% have been to the archipelago at least ten times. Some 91% of German tourists choose the islands because of their climate, but also for the tranquillity, relaxation and beaches.

In this PGA tournament held in the Golf Club Munich Eichenried, Turismo de Canarias has its own marquee that it is sharing with Gran Canaria Golf, Promoción Exterior de Lanzarote, SPET Turismo de Tenerife and the Fuerteventura Tourism Board, as well as representatives from golf courses and hotels from the Canary Islands. One side of the marquee is decorated with images of golf courses and the other of more general views of the islands.
